FACES OF TAY

Maya Cameron grew up in San Francisco and currently lives in the Mission District. In her teen years, Maya experienced foster care and juvenile systems which have led her to advocate for at-risk youth and prisoners rights. Maya has long believed that more services and support should be provided for those who are thrown out of group homes or foster homes at the age of eighteen without any skills needed to survive. Maya is currently obtaining her AA degree at City College of San Francisco and hopes to transfer to University of California Berkeley in the near future. She is currently apart of the TAY Youn g Adult Team and wants to continue her advocacy for at-risk youth in San Francisco.

Hard Times Call for Funding Innovation

AtC I Think I Can Campaign

Disconnected young adults, 16-24 years old, are left with little as San Francisco faces unprecedented budget cuts.

In this bi-monthly e-newsletter, we are excited to highlight the transitional age youth community's best practices in innovative fundraising.

At front and center is At the Crossroads, a Mission-based non-profit serving young adults on the streets, that is stimulating its donor base through its "I Think I Can Campaign".

The campaign is a grassroots approach to catalyze individual donors, as each person creates a campaign to reach a personal goal on the website (e.g. think weight loss, quitting smoking, etc.) and then asks friends to support their effort by committing money at AtC.

Executive Director Rob Gitin's personal mission to date comedian Sarah Silverman was recently reported in the SF Chronicle's Datebook.

This year's campaign has raised $33,924 from 73 individual campaigns, from a total of 597 donors. The campaign continues through mid-April and hopes to raise $60,000.

Small non-profits may benefit from At the Crossroads' innovative strategy: build a social networking tool with an online pledge drive. Focus on small individual donations from its network of community supporters.

This emerging strategy may be a sustainable money maker for other community based organizations to replicate.

In community,

Rachel Antrobus
Director, Transitional Age Youth - San Francisco
